Powerful Little Post-its!

This week I came across two great uses for the humble post-it.

One of my consultant friends , Geraldine, arrived at a planning meeting armed with load of colourful little Post-it pads and a large sheet of paper with 12 squares (months) on it. We were planning a calendar of events for a membership group for the coming year. By jotting down basic event details (purpose, venue, time, speaker etc.) on the Post-its and moving them around the months on the sheet, we were quickly able to plot the activities and space different types of events out appropriately. What had formerly taken us ages was tackled in jig-time.

In If it Won’t Fit on a Post-it, It Won’t Fit In Your Day Mark McGuinness describes how one of his most valuable productivity tools is his stack of 3” x 3” post-its. The top post-it contains his to-do list for today (and today only!). Unless something is extremely urgent AND important, Mark never adds anything to today’s list. The next post-it in the stack lists the things he needs to tackle tomorrow and any ideas that come into his head today that don’t belong on today’s to-do list. Mark says that there are two really great things about his post-it system. Firstly, it makes him think hard about his priorities each day. Secondly, when he starts work he knows exactly how much he has to get through – which also allows him to plan how to spend ‘quiet’ time creatively.

You’ll find some great ideas for using Post-its creatively here.

Already using Post-its to boost your productivity? We’d love to hear how.
