Manage your energy (and see how your time management works out!!)

What is energy management? According to Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz, authors of “The Power of Full Engagement” (The Free Press, 2003), it calls for balancing both sides of the human energy equation: energy expenditure and energy renewal.

What are these energies that we need to draw upon and subsequently replenish in our daily lives?  These would be physical, emotional, mental and spiritual (this being our sense of purpose and meaning).

We all know what it feels like to feel depleted of our physical energy, our bodies crave rest and restoration and it is so important to meet that need in order to function effectively in our lives.  In an ideal world, we would all get our required amount of restful sleep and our time off would be filled with relaxing, fun things to do.  Realistically though, we need to be more conscious of replenishing our physical energies in small, daily ways such as taking 10 minutes alone and practicing deep breathing, a real gift to self.

And what of our emotional, mental and spiritual energies, what drains these energies from you and what daily practices can you include to replenish these life forces?

And how does this impact on time management??  Well from my own experience, taking 10 minutes quiet time both focuses and energises me and my day becomes more productive than if I start the day with a million “musts” and “shoulds” running through my brain.  How more fulfilled would you feel if you paid attention to your energy management?
